The music on this set is fine, but there are so many bass solos by leader Kirwan Brown that the other musicians (even keyboardist Eric Gunnison, who has a few good spots) are almost irrelevant. Brown wrote (or one case co-wrote) seven of the nine originals, and this CD was obviously set up as a showcase for his playing. Brown shows off his virtuosity on both fretted and fretless basses, but after a few songs it becomes tiring. The lack of variety, both in the songs and the sounds, eventually lowers the quality of this effort.
