After an aborted Motown career, Carolyn Crawford, one of the label’s failed heirs to Mary Wells’ “Queen of Motown” throne, released her first solo album on Mercury Records as Caroline Crawford. Sandwiched between Motown and this LP was a short stint with Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford; the group’s mentor, William “Mickey” Stevenson, drop-kicked Crawford after some initial recordings and HJS continued as a trio. Bohannon wrote, produced, arranged, and directed the seven tracks, and his patented rhythmic, shuffling sound, interspersed with some ballads, makes this album an extension of his Summertime Groove LP (1978), where he featured Crawford’s vibrant vocals. Mercury’s neglect kept this LP from improving their bottom line or Crawford’s career, in spite of infectious ditties like “Tell Me You’ll Wait,” “Coming on Strong,” and “Caroline Breakdown.”
